Review: KOA Asheville West NC

Asheville West KOA

KOA Asheville West is a small campground west of Asheville NC and east of Great Smoky Mountains National Park.  It is just north of the Blueridge Parkway.  The campground itself is small and quiet.  It is also in a very rugged mountain area near I40 with amazing views in any direction.  The owners are quite nice and friendly.

The location is ideal for Asheville, the Blueridge Parkway, Great Smoky Mountain National Park.  Asheville is a really nice town with a lot of culture in the downtown area.  Shop and Eat on Broadway St while you are there.

The KOA is about 15 minutes West of Asheville on I40 and about the same distance to the east of Great Smoky Mountain National Park.  If you are looking at driving the Blueridge Parkway there is a great place to get on the parkway near the KOA.  Highway 151 just south east of the KOA will take you up a steep but scenic switchback to the parkway at the top of the mountains.  Although RV’s can navigate most of the tunnels on the Blueridge Parkway this switchback is narrow and tight and I would not recommend it for anything bigger than a passenger vehicle.   Driving the Blueridge Parkway east about an hour will bring you to an official National Park visitor center and shortly past that, Mount Mitchell State Park will bring you up over 6000ft elevation.  On the return trip you can take Town Mountain Rd back into Asheville and see some of the million dollar homes on the side of the mountains.
