Review: KOA Lake Placid NY

October 3, 2015
Lake Placid KOA

KOA Lake Placid is hands down our favorite KOA.  We have been to quite a few KOA campgrounds and this one stands out as so unique from the rest.  It is more like a State Park or Provincial Park but with all the additional amenities.  Its location is what makes it so unique.  It is a little bit of a drive outside Lake Placid up in the foot hills of Whiteface Mountain.   It is a well forested location which means the sites are well forested also.  The whole campground feels much more natural than your average KOA.  The main building’s lodge like construction is even unique, unlike the traditional steep roofed KOA office.  Even the view from the pool area is fantastic looking at Whiteface mountain.

This KOA has all the features that you would expect from a KOA: playgrounds, wagon rides, a pool, mini golf etc.  Even the hiking is well above par.  They have some excellent nature trails along the Ausable river.

The town itself is quite unique, it has that summer cottage feel.  It is small with lots of little shops, bars and restaurants.  It still has the character of a world class Olympic Village, but the whole town is the Olympic Village.  It is a really nice place to spend time exploring on foot or on bike.  If you have never been to 5000ft elevation and do not want to do the hike, you can actually drive right to the peak of Whiteface Mountain.  The last few hundred feet to the actual peak can either be done by elevator or very short hike.  The view is stunning and on a clear day you can see all the way to Montreal.

Overall this ranks as our favorite KOA of all the KOA we have ever been to.
